In fact one of the 'new' owners has been managing the place for several years already, the other two have been owners since the beginning. We had a great time, and would highly suggest making this a stop on your culinary path!. You can enjoy your meal on the waterfront deck, or inside the quaint restaurant. Your going to the the right town. Not greasy fried, but instead light and a little bit crispyl This is a no frills place with a family atmosphere.
I enjoyed watching the all the waitresses bring out orders so I could see the different menu items. The firecracker shrimp were good as was the clam chowder. Instead of entrées we ordered four appetizers. The food was excellent and the service was great even when they got super busy the bartender, Kat, was attentive and introduced everyone at the bar to us. We seated ourselves on a bench facing the water. The deep fried corn is to die for! Of course, fish and chips fit into both categories and the full bar and sweet view set the ideal environment for a good time. A friend and I ate here based on a positive recommendation from a mutual friend.
There was no hostess at the door to greet us, but rather a sign saying to go to the bar to request a table. There are several mentions of no atmosphere! Two notes the portion of fish was excellent, and they dont start you out with a pound of hushpuppies, you get some with your meal. We will go to Crab Catchers again as soon as we can. The prices have been increased to an unreasonable level for the quality of the food and the type of restaurant. In fact, this was probably the best meal we had on vacation this year. Not a lot of atmosphere, but that, in itself, makes it memorable.
Rating: 4 We had dinner there last Tuesday with our children, and enjoyed it very much. We were seated at the Tiki bar on a pier over the river. I even put up with the smoke and went a second time in 4 days! While the seafood itself was great, and the fried corn and fries were also good, as were the homemade pies - the real shocker came from the pricetag. Maybe the drinks come to the table faster than the food. Rating: 5 While on a trip from Myrtle Beach to Carolina Beach, we were disappointed to find out that our restaurant of choice was closed. Our grandparents were able to share a seafood platter.
The gentlemen left it up but said if anythiing happened the customer would be responsible. I had the trigger fish, stuffed devil crab, deep fried corn on the cob, french fries and cole slaw, and nice locals next to us gave us a wonderful piece of Birthday cake. We have made a habit of eating at this restaurant an average of 2 times per month during the summer months. I can appreciate fresh fish, and let me say that anyone at my table who had fish on their plates received the freshest, flakiest fish we could have asked for. Tried many of the places in Calabash but Crab Catchers is our favorite. Besides waiting for a while for our order to be taken, the menu has changed.
There were a few people at the outdoor bar who had just come in off their boat. Once seated, the waitress was very upfront about the fact it would be 30-45 minutes before our food would arrive. With a large deck overlooking the Intracoastal Waterway and an indoor dining area surrounded by large pane-glass windows, Captain Juel's Hurricane Restaurant allows patrons a view of the harbor, where the Hurricane fleet of fishing boats return from deeper waters to deliver seafood to the dock. Nice wine list and dessert selection too. We will never go back.
Fresh oysters are also a popular choice. I should mention the house bread is croissants with honey. I would definitely go there again. All in all I give this place a 1 out of 10. The food was excellent, we absolutely loved the atmosphere.
We have been regular customers for the past 5 years and have even driven down in the winter for one night just because we were craving the Crab Catchers seabass. The atmosphere is great for families and it is not very noisy! I suggest the calamari as it was probably the best thing we ordered. We will be right with you guys? He couldn't finish them all! The rest of the food was really below average. Cleanliness was not a priority here either. The atmosphere is just big and really lout which makes it hard to socialize with those you came with. So much so that we feel at home just walking in the door.
